OH THE FACES iMAKE!
If you don't already know - I'm very into technology. I feel it's important to incorporate technology into my teaching. It has enhance my teaching greatly and I feel it can enhance student learning in every subject area. The arts are no different. In fact Visual Art and Technology are the perfect combinations. I began this school year with a goal - to acquire iPads to use with students in all of my art classes. My short-term goal is to have 6-8 iPads that students could use as cooperative groups of 3-5 students. My long-term goal is to acquire a class set of iPads that all the art teachers could share throughout the district so that all art students can benefit.
So far I've had little success. I've written a request to various places for grants to fund this quest. I'm currently working on writing a grant to the Moline Public Schools Foundation due early this Spring. I also plan on putting in a DonorsChoose.org request soon - So be looking for information on that!
But - I will not wait until then to expose the students to how the iPad can be a great tool for Art and more! I have my own iPad that I begun to use with small groups during Art. I started with 2 classes (Mr. Veto's & Mrs. Wadsworth's) and will move on to other classes as I can work it in.
These two classes are doing a portrait project that includes the iPad app FacesiMake. Students are using the app in groups to create a digital collage using the app. They are also each doing a traditional artwork - a collage using paper and magazine pictures.
There was no greater feeling for me to see students faces light up as they used an iPad for the first time. I was thrilled to give them that opportunity!
(Let me apologize right now to any parent who had to endure the pleadings for you to get them an iPad as a result of this! But really - it's a great educational tool)
If you do have an iPad - check out my website on iPads in the Art Room for great apps that you can get for your child and how they can be used!
