Some classes last week enjoyed a Reward Day because of their great behavior in Art!
I have a behavior system that I call ART STARS. As part of being a school district involved in Continuous Improvement, we have SMART goals established in our classrooms. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. The SMART goal in the Art room for 1st quarter is that, "80% of the students will earn a green, or smiley face, on their behavior chart each art class." The students have individual accountability in their personal behavior charts each art class where they can earn a green (smiley face) for having no behavior warnings during art, or a yellow (straight mouth face) for one warning during art class, or a red (sad face) for more than one warning in a class. At the end of Art, students mark their behavior charts and line up. We chart if we made our goal or not up on the Data Center.
If the goal is made, and all messes have been cleaned up, I color a letter in on that class' ART STAR.
Once all letters have been filled the class has earned a reward!
Sometimes the reward for filling the star is a Reward Free Art Day and sometimes it is a special treat or items given to the students. It depends on the class, the art lessons or projects in progress, supplies available, and other factors.
This past week a few classes enjoyed their first Reward Day. Mrs. Watts', Mrs. Ramirez's, Mrs. Petersen's, and Mrs. Wadsworth's classes all had fun during a Free Art Reward Day.
They were able to draw, color, cut, glue, and basically be super creative during Art. They enjoyed this time to pair up with friends and create together without any lesson or steps - just create!
I love watching this. There is no worries of getting graded or even having to keep the creations.
Here are some pictures of what one class came up with.
I'm very excited to be again teaching at Roosevelt this year! The students and I have such fun, creative classes together. I love the enthusiasm of our Roosevelt Bears!
