Our first art lessons of the year deal with the Element of Line. Students review line quality and using a variety of lines in their artworks.
Kindergarten students are introduced to line and practice making them in a few different projects. Last week we read Harold and the Purple Crayon and made our own drawings with our purple crayons. We even did a great big drawing together as a group with a big purple crayon.
1st grade, 2nd grade, Mrs. Kipp's, and Mrs. Timmer's 2nd/3rd grade classes are all doing a review of line with the same project. I call it "Hands Up". We each traced our hand and arm down to our elbows. Using crayons, we designed our arm with lots of different kinds of lines. Then we are painting over the crayon lines with watercolor paint to make it very colorful. This technique is called a Crayon-resist. In a crayon-resist the paint will not stick to the wax of the crayons, so the lines show up great! When these are finished we will cut them out and they will be displayed all together. 4th grade, 5th grade, and Mrs. Tague's 3rd grade students are all reviewing the element of line also. These 3 classes are doing a Zentagle project and are enjoying it. Don't know what a Zentangle is? Check out this website that explains the birth of the Zentangle. Students watched this video before they began their own Zentangle designs.
Washington has been my "Home" school for many years now. I enjoy teaching all the different students who make up this diverse school. I have taught a multitude of lessons in this building and have learned just as much from all of the students.
